Portugal: a success story of the expansion of the AVINENT Implant System

If any country has received the AVINENT Implant System with open arms and made the company feel 100% welcome when presenting its products, it is Portugal. At the start of this decade, AVINENT began an internationalisation and expansion strategy in the foremost leading countries of the world, including Portugal. Today, six years after embarking on this adventure, Portugal has become one of the markets where AVINENT has most consolidated its offer, especially with regard to dental implants. Xavier Boadas, Head of the International Department at AVINENT sees everything very clearly: “Portugal has become the best client, at international level, of the AVINENT Implant System.”

What is behind this successful expansion in the Portuguese market? Well, as Boadas says, there are different factors that have led to this. Firstly, Portugal “has a market profile that is quite similar to the Spanish market, because its dentists also use, to a large extent, external connection (EC) implants.” In this regard, Boadas highlights that “our extensive know-how in this field has allowed us to promote our products more easily and confidently.” Secondly, the fact that there are two families of implants, CORAL and OCEAN, with the aforementioned external connection, “has provided us with a certain strength when opening a market in this country.” Lastly, AVINENT also offers products outside of implantology field which complement and strengthen its presence in the country, such as the CAD CAM family and those of ADH, which position the AVINENT brand not only within the dental sector, but also throughout the whole medical spectrum.

AVINENT Portugal has consolidated its market in the centre of the country (Lisbon and its surrounding area) over the last few years and at this present moment in time it is developing its business to the north and the south.

The products with which AVINENT has rolled out its presence in Portugal are the implant systems, and within this sector, as described by Xavier Boadas, “those that have external connection” play a special role. The CORAL implant, which was the first implant system developed by AVINENT and which has shown to have greater predictability and maximum reliability, and in this case with an external connection (EC), is the bestselling AVINENT product in Portugal. The OCEAN implant system, with an external connection has also been well received in the country. Lastly, products that have really come to the fore to open up the Portuguese market are the OCEAN implant system with the conical connection (CC) or the PEARL mini-implant.

The outlook for 2019 is to make a firm commitment to presenting the whole AVINENT CAD CAM line, which “will aim to complement the implants system line,” Xavier Boadas revealed. In addition, Boadas assures that the AVINENT Digital Health line “plays an essential role when positioning itself in Portugal, demonstrating its high capacity for developing personalised solutions, making it possible to provide a response to the needs of the maxillofacial field and for the whole human body.”

Events that consolidate the presence of AVINENT in Portugal

AVINENT believes in the dissemination of its work and training as strategic pillars for its growth. It is for this reason that it participates in numerous training activities for professionals in Portugal where they organise practical courses in the use of implants. The company also has a presence in the main events of the sector, and evidence of this is its participation in the recent Expodentária trade fair and the OMD (Ordem dos Médicos Dentistas) Congress, held simultaneously in Porto last November. At this event, which is held alternatively between the cities of Porto and Lisbon, AVINENT attended with a stand that doubled the size of last year’s and attracted a high number of visitors. AVINENT presented its entire CAD CAM line and “we even presented a few examples of ADH to display the technology that the company has and the extent to which it is reaching the medical sector, although it was essentially a congress aimed mainly at dentists,” says Boadas.

Furthermore, in September 2019 Lisbon will be hosting the European Association for Osseointegration (EAO) Congress, an important event dedicated to implantology and which is held every year in a different European city. The event attracts professionals and associations from all around the world. AVINENT, as can be expected, will be present and displaying its implant systems, CAD CAM solutions and the latest ADH advances.
